Two seniors in ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø's Samuel W. and Marilyn C. Seidel School of Education – Emily Ellis of, Sykesville MD, and Claudia Reynolds of Elkton, MD – recently were recognized by the National Association for School-University Partnerships (NASUP) as 2025 Emerging SUP Leader Award winners at the NASUP conference in New Orleans. The award recognizes students for their work in school-university partnerships and in local clinical practice placements.

The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Police Department is doing its part to prepare students for spring break. While SU is expected to be quieter during the break, some students may opt to stick around near campus. SUPD Captain Chris Shockley said if students do plan to stay in town, Unversity Police will also be present in case of an emergency. He also offered safety tips for those staying in Salisbury or traveling elsewhere: "It’s always just knowing your surroundings; be safe, walk in groups, travel in well-lit areas, and if you see anything, don’t hesitate to call," he said.

Members of the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø scientific community gathered Friday to voice their concerns about the Trump administration's federal cuts to scientific agencies. The event coincided with a national protest in Washington, D.C. and other rallies nationwide. Faculty members in various natural and social sciences spoke to a crowd of approximately 25 people.

It isn’t often the government tells anglers to catch and keep as many fish as possible, but that’s the case right now with invasive blue catfish in the Chesapeake Bay. With a population explosion, blue cats have reached every tributary to the bay, and the only way to battle the negative impact on local fish is to remove blue catfish. “Eat them, give them to neighbors, feed the cat or use them as fertilizer—just get rid of blue catfish,” is the message from Dr. Noah Bressman, a member of Maryland’s Invasive Catfish Advisory Committee and a professor at ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.

Dan Quinn could not have imagined a better first season as head coach of the Washington Commanders. Taking over a 4-13 team, Quinn led Washington to a 12-5 record and an appearance in the NFC championship game. It was the franchise's best season in 33 years. Quinn should have been named NFL Coach of the Year but fell short. However, he received a much more significant honor when his alma mater, ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, announced that he would be the University's Commencement speaker for its 100th graduating class.

Eleven Maryland colleges and universities, including ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, will receive grants from the Maryland Energy Administration totaling $10.17 million to cut greenhouse gas emissions on their campuses. SU's share includes $900,000. The administration expects projects on the grant recipients’ campuses will avert more than 2,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year.

A new survey provided by ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø's Business, Economic and Community Outreach Network (BEACON) shows business expectations have declined on the Eastern Shore. According to John Hickman, BEACON director, business owners’ expectations have fallen since the start of the year. Some reasons for low optimism include inflation, the labor force and financing. These barriers impact businesses looking to expand or even get started.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid deadline snuck up on ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø sophomore Colin McEvers, who said time is of the essence. Last academic year, FAFSA updated its services to make applying for student aid easier, and the application launched in December instead of October. Mason White, director of financial aid and scholarships at SU, said parents and students should prioritize completing their FAFSA for the upcoming school year to have their fair shot at accessing more than $130 million in Maryland state funding.
